Bethel World Outreach Church also known as the City of Hope is more than just a building. It is a vibrant hub of spiritual growth and community engagement. Founded in August 1990 by Dr and Mrs Darlingston G Johnson it began with a humble gathering of 17 people at Howard University’s Blackburn Center. This small seed of faith blossomed rapidly.
The church’s journey wasn’t without its moves. From its initial location it relocated to Silver Spring Maryland before settling in its current location at 8242 Georgia Avenue. Growth continued steadily. A second location Bethel North was established in Clarksburg Maryland to serve a wider community. This later moved to a renovated YMCA building in Gaithersburg Maryland before the church finally found its spacious home on 60 acres of land in Olney Maryland. This stunning complex includes a 68000 square foot educational building and a gymnasium.
The story of Bethel isn’t merely about bricks and mortar. It’s a story of resilience and international reach. Born from the turmoil of Liberia’s civil war the Johnsons’ faith led them to establish Bethel as a beacon of hope for those seeking spiritual guidance and community support. Today the church boasts over 2500 members from more than 51 countries. Bethel is more than a local church. It’s a network of global communities. Bethel World Outreach Ministries International a larger umbrella organization boasts more than 150 churches worldwide.
Beyond its walls Bethel actively extends its mission. It plants churches conducts evangelistic meetings builds schools and provides humanitarian aid. This demonstrates the church’s genuine care for those in need. It’s not simply about Sunday services; it’s about a commitment to making a real difference in the world.
