What if these walls could talk? The Bethel Lutheran Church in Windhoek holds stories within its structure, tales of faith and community etched into its very foundation.

This is the Bethel Lutheran Church. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith in Namibia.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia, or ELCIN, has deep roots. Its origins trace back to 1870. The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission began its work among the Ovambo and Kavango people. This was in the north of what became German South West Africa in 1884.

Initially known as the Evangelical Lutheran Ovambokavango Church, it adopted the name ELCIN in 1984. The church expanded from its northern base to other regions of the country. In 1992, the ELCIN divided into two dioceses, Eastern and Western, each led by a bishop.

The ELCIN engages in a wide array of activities. These include a printing press, a public library, and a rehabilitation center. There is also an institute for training deacons and lay preachers, a museum, and two high schools. They also run community projects for HIV prevention, nurseries and a sewing workshop.

Lutheran Medical Services, under ELCIN supervision, manages extensive health programs. These encompass primary health care and two large hospitals. Over 5,000 staff and volunteers dedicate themselves to these institutions. Theological training occurs at the United Lutheran Theological Seminary in Windhoek. It is jointly owned by the ELCIN and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia. The ELCIN is a founding member of the Council of Churches in Namibia.

The ELCIN played a vital role in resisting South African apartheid. It was also important in the struggle for liberation and independence. Dr. Kleopas Dumeni, a former presiding bishop, is a notable figure in this regard. Because of its location near the Angolan border, the church was in a war zone. The South African army was fighting against SWAPO.

In March 2007, the ELCIN, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN), and the German-speaking Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (GELC) formed the United Church Council of the Lutheran Churches in Namibia. Their goal was to unite into one church.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia has a bishop president. The church has various names in different languages. It has affiliations with the Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa. It is also affiliated with the United Evangelical Mission and the World Council of Churches.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia joined the Lutheran World Federation in 1970. It has 420,000 members.

The Bethel Lutheran Church stands as a beacon. It represents the growth and resilience of the Lutheran community in Namibia. Its story reflects faith, service, and the pursuit of unity.
