In 1922, a seed of education was planted in Shanghai. That seed was Bethel High School. Now, here we stand, decades later, at its current home in Fairview Park, Yuen Long. Bethel High School’s journey reflects the dynamism of Hong Kong itself. Originally established as part of the Bethel Mission by Shi Meiyu, known as Mary Stone, and Jennie V. Hughes, the school initially served the community in Shanghai. Imagine the bustling city in the 1920s, the energy and hope of a new school taking root. Then, in 1950, amidst significant change, Bethel High School relocated to Hong Kong. It found its first home in Kowloon City on Gramplan Road. The school became a vital part of the post-war landscape. It offered a quality education to a generation rebuilding their lives. Bethel High School quickly grew, expanding to over 40 classes encompassing both Chinese and English departments. This growth speaks to the dedication of the teachers and staff. In 1982, reflecting Hong Kong’s evolving educational policies, Bethel High School transitioned to a government-subsidized institution. Its final move, in 1989, brought it to its current location in Fairview Park, Yuen Long. This move mirrored the ongoing development of Hong Kong. Even today, the school remains rooted in the spirit of Christ. It continues to uphold its founding ideals. These ideals include “Teaching Without Distinction of Social Status” and “Teaching in accordance with Students’ Aptitude”. Bethel High School continues to nurture and educate the next generation. Its journey from Shanghai to Yuen Long demonstrates its enduring commitment to education.
