“Snow white exterior catches the eyes from far away”. This is what they say about the Bethel Bible Seminary. Founded in 1925, the Bethel Bible Seminary has a rich history. It began as the Bethel Mission in Shanghai.
The seminary was first named Bethel Bible College. It offered a three-year curriculum then. In 1938, the seminary moved to Hong Kong. It was later renamed Bethel Bible Seminary in 1947. The curriculum changed to a four-year Bachelor of Theology degree.
The move to Hong Kong was prompted by the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937. Warfare extended to Shanghai. Evangelists sought refuge in Hong Kong. They started services on Grampian Road. After the war, the seminary briefly resumed operations in Shanghai in 1946. The site was damaged. The base moved back to Hong Kong.
Bethel Bible Seminary is one of Hong Kong’s oldest seminaries. It is a popular institution for Biblical and Theological Studies. Around 1,000 students study for a Bachelor of Theology. The seminary is at 45-47 Grampian Road Kowloon. You can visit it Mondays to Fridays. The opening times are from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm.
The main building showcases architectural eclecticism. Neoclassical features are prominent. Because of its authenticity and historical significance, it is a Grade II historic building. This exquisite colonial building was listed as a historic building in 1993. It was officially recognized on December 18, 2009.
The building design is symmetrical. It includes central floral stone staircases. The seminary was likely built in the 1930s. The Bethel Council purchased it in 1939. The main building became a seminary. The rear building served as an orphanage with dormitories. After the war, the property was reclaimed. It was upgraded to a seminary. Today, the rear building houses a kindergarten.
Bethel Bible Seminary has expanded its course offerings over the years. In 1989, Certificates in Biblical/Theological Studies for Church Leaders were set up. In 1994, Certificates/Diploma in Christian Counseling were introduced. In 1997, the seminary affiliated with Acadia University. It started offering Master of Divinity degrees.
Several individuals have led the Bethel Bible Seminary. Dr. Alice Lan served as principal from 1930 to 1973. Rev. Donald C. Y. Wong was principal from 1973 to 1990. Rev. Gaspard K.T. Lam led from 1990 to 2008. Since July 2009, Dr. Fai Luk has been the principal.
Munsang College stands opposite the Bethel Bible Seminary. Among the Chinese elite, quality education was synonymous with Christian schooling. Munsang College was named after its founders. They were directors of the Kai Tak investment company. It operated the old Kai Tak airport.
The Bethel Christian Church is next door. It was founded by Mary Stone. She was one of the first Chinese women to study in the USA. Mary was born into a prominent Christian family in eastern China. Her father was one of the Methodist Episcopal Church’s first Pastors. Her mother was a preacher.
Today, the Bethel Bible Seminary continues its legacy. It is spearheading Christian education in Hong Kong. Its grand neoclassical building stands as a testament to its enduring mission.
