Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church

In 1977, a small group of believers gathered in a Northeast Washington, D.C. home. This marked the humble beginnings of Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The church’s journey started in the residence of Christine Sanders. These faithful individuals, the charter members of Beth Shalom, began to lay the foundation for a vibrant community of faith. They quickly outgrew the space and in March 1978, Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church found its first official home at 1249 Bladensburg Road, N.E. This move signified a significant step in the church’s growth and its commitment to serving the community. Years later, another milestone was reached. In 2013, Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church moved to its current location at 8100 Malcolm Road in Clinton, Maryland. Throughout its history, Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church has been guided by a series of dedicated pastors. The Reverend Sadie Jackson, Reverend Lorenzo McCormick, and Reverend Charles H. Strayhorn all served the church with unwavering dedication. Each leader contributed to the church’s growth and spiritual development. Today, Reverend Dr. Darrell J. Gaskin continues this legacy. He has served as pastor since 1991. Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a hub of community activity and outreach. Ministries include a homeless ministry, a vibrant church school, monthly fellowship meetings, and a lively vacation bible school. The church also supports a liturgical dance ministry known as the Dancing Angels. Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church also gives back to the wider community. The Reverend Charles H. Strayhorn Scholarship Fund supports educational pursuits. A Thanksgiving food drive and a school uniform program for North Forestville Elementary School demonstrate the church’s commitment to practical acts of service. Music plays an integral role in the life of Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The New Direction Choir, formed by merging the Voices of Inspiration and the New Horizon Choir, fills the sanctuary with uplifting music. The Serenity Singers, the Men’s Ensemble, and the Praise Team also contribute to the rich musical tapestry of the church. Beth Shalom African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church has a rich history of community involvement. From summer camps for local children to tutoring programs, park cleanups, and the Toys for Tots program, the church strives to make a positive impact on the lives of those around them.
