“Östen, look!” Birger nudged his friend, pointing towards a grassy mound. “Do you think someone powerful rests beneath that?” We stand before Bergaholms gravfält, a place whispering tales of ancient lives. Bergaholms gravfält isn’t just one site, but two distinct areas teeming with history. West of the Bergaholm estate, an oak-studded slope holds one of Salem’s largest Iron Age burial grounds. Imagine the rituals and beliefs of the people who laid their loved ones to rest here centuries ago. This western section of Bergaholms gravfält boasts an impressive 174 ancient monuments. They include mounds, round stone settings, rectangular and square settings, and even a ship-shaped setting. Amidst these silent stones stands the Bergaholmsstenen, a rune stone etched with a message from the 11th century. The inscription reads, “Östen had this stone raised in memory of Torgärd, his sister, Hallbjörn in memory of his mother.” This stone, a tangible link to the past, offers a glimpse into the familial bonds and societal structures of a bygone era. East of the Bergaholm estate, another field of graves stretches out. This eastern section of Bergaholms gravfält contains around 125 burial sites. These date from both the older and younger Iron Age. While not yet excavated, the forms of the graves—50 raised stones and 73 grassy mounds—hint at their age. Some mounds are so flat they are hard to discern, further adding to the mystery of this ancient site. Bergaholms gravfält is more than just a collection of graves. It’s a testament to the lives and legacies of those who came before us. As you walk among these ancient stones, let your imagination soar. Picture the ceremonies, the mourning, and the reverence that once filled this space.
