Boaters take note of its dimensions. When closed, the bridge offers a vertical clearance of 16 feet. Horizontally, there’s a 49-foot opening.

The draw of the S231 bridge opens on signal at mile 18.5. However, there’s a caveat between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. During these hours, you need to notify the Toll Captain before 6 p.m.

In 2016, SHA undertook a project. It drove piles under the swing span. This required temporary 30-minute closures between midnight and 5 a.m. These new piles reinforced the fender system. The goal was simple. Protect the bridge from collisions with marine traffic.

The project cost $3.5 million. Corman Marine Construction, Inc. handled the work. New navigational lights were installed. They enhance visibility for boats passing under the Benedict Bridge.
