Named for generous philanthropists Howard and Sondra Bender it quickly became a campus landmark. More than just basketball and volleyball games it hosts concerts and commencements. Up to 6000 people can fill its seats. The main court is dedicated to “Pop” Cassell a legendary AU athletic director and coach.
Imagine Pearl Jam electrifying the crowd in 1991. Or Phish ringing in the New Year in 1993. These legendary bands played here. Bender Arena has witnessed history. Not just musical history either. It hosted Patriot League men’s basketball tournament finals in 2002 2008 and 2009. The 2012 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic also took place here.
The arena itself is part of a larger complex. A fitness center a wrestling room and the Reeves Aquatic Center are all nearby. There’s even a convenient campus store. AU students can attend class grab a bite to eat and catch a game all within the same complex. That’s convenience.
