“A college built on steaks?” you might ask. Well, not quite, but the story of Bellevue University begins at a Bellevue, Nebraska, steakhouse. In June 1965, Bill Brooks, a member of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, proposed an idea that would sizzle and transform the community: a new college in Bellevue. The discussion, intended for just five minutes, stretched to over thirty, fueled by enthusiasm for this ambitious vision. Bellevue, a growing city anchored by Offutt Air Force Base, seemed ripe for a higher education institution.

Just a year later, in 1966, Bellevue College, the precursor to Bellevue University, opened its doors, a testament to the community’s dedication and foresight. Initially, the college faced its share of challenges. The summer of 1986 saw construction of the Margre H. Durham Student Center, a symbol of hope during a time of enrollment dips and an evolving educational landscape. Dr. John B. Muller, hired the previous year, launched a strategic plan to address these challenges. This plan targeted not just increasing enrollment but also sustaining growth through innovative business practices and investment in new programs. By the 1990s, Bellevue College had lowered its debt and launched the innovative Professional Studies program.

Bellevue University officially adopted its current name in 1994. This marked not just a name change but a pivotal shift in the institution’s trajectory. Bellevue University became a pioneer in online education. In 1996, it became one of the first accredited institutions to offer online degree programs, followed by another first: offering a Master of Business Administration degree online. The university’s commitment to adult education and flexible learning options continued to grow. By 2014, Bellevue University served over 13,000 students annually, both on campus and online, solidifying its place as a leader in adult education. Today, Bellevue University offers a diverse array of over 80 degrees in high-growth career fields, as well as certificates for career development.

The legacy of Bellevue University is not just about bricks and mortar or digital classrooms. It’s about the transformation of lives through education. The Digital Archives at the Bellevue University library house a treasure trove of this history, from vintage party invitations to photographs of basketball players and oral histories of the founders. So, the next time you enjoy a perfectly cooked steak, remember the one that sparked an idea, an idea that grew into Bellevue University, an institution that continues to empower individuals to reach their full potential.
