Its history stretches back to the 1700s when Scottish settlers named it after the Earl of Belhaven. Belle Haven thrived as a port along the Potomac. Later it became part of the West Grove Plantation a sprawling estate built by Hugh West around 1748.
The West family were influential figures in Virginia’s politics. Hugh himself served as a burgess and a vestryman. His son John continued his public service until his death in 1777. The plantation changed hands in 1814. Col Augustine J Smith expanded the property dramatically. He drained swamps built a dike and constructed thirteen new buildings. This included larger quarters for his forty enslaved people. Tragedy struck during the Civil War. The 39th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment burned the plantation to the ground.
Belle Haven as we know it today began in the 1920s. David Howell a civil engineer purchased the land. He established two corporations one for a golf course and club and another for residential development. The golf course became the Belle Haven Country Club which still exists. The subdivision included large luxury homes manors cottages and townhouses. These homes lined tree-lined streets.
