Emanuel Raphael Belilios. A name whispered with respect at Belilios Public School. He wouldn’t recognize this bustling location on Tin Hau Temple Road. But his legacy echoes here. Belilios Public School stands as a testament to his generosity and vision. Imagine Hong Kong in 1890. The government established the Central School for Girls. It was meant to be a counterpart to the boys’ school, Queen’s College. The school needed a proper home. This is where Belilios stepped in. In 1893, he donated a substantial sum of HK$25,000. This allowed for the construction of a new building on Hollywood Road. The school gratefully adopted his name. Belilios Public School was born. The school was not only the first government school for girls in Hong Kong. It also held the distinction of being the first bilingual school. This forward-thinking approach set the stage for its future success. The school has seen a few moves over the years. After World War II, it temporarily relocated to Hospital Road. Then in 1965, it found its permanent home here on Tin Hau Temple Road. This move marked a new chapter. The school adopted its motto “Climb High, See Wide”. A new school song and badge were also introduced. Today, Belilios Public School is known for its academic excellence. It boasts impressive results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE). Several students have achieved top scores, earning them recognition as “Top Scorers” and even “Super Top Scorers”. The school is also dedicated to all-around development.
