Atop the Colonius a breathtaking view unfolds. This isn’t just any tower. It’s the Belgischer Fernmelde- und Fernsehturm Cologne’s tallest telecommunications tower. Built between 1978 and 1981 the Colonius initially stood at 252.9 meters. But that wasn’t enough.
In the early 1990s the spire was replaced. This increased the Colonius’ height to its current 266 meters. A helicopter was even used in 2004 to install a new antenna. This upgrade enabled digital television broadcasts throughout the Cologne-Bonn region. The Colonius is a testament to engineering. It’s also a symbol of Cologne’s progress.
Its impressive structure houses more than just antennas. At 166 meters a three-story section exists. Here a cafeteria once stood. There was also a revolving restaurant and a nightclub. These popular attractions however closed in 1999. A 1990s New Year’s Eve incident caused a stampede. Overcrowding led to panic amongst the revelers. This unfortunately contributed to the decision to permanently close the public areas.
Two high-speed elevators ascend the Colonius. They reach a speed of six meters per second. There is even a third elevator reaching a technical level at 174 meters. For the adventurous a staircase with 925 steps remains accessible. This incredible tower wasn’t always appreciated. It was initially received with mixed emotions. But today the Colonius is a cherished landmark.
In 2022 the Belgischer Fernmelde- und Fernsehturm was added to Cologne’s list of protected monuments. It stands as a symbol of resilience and evolution. Despite its closure to the public its functional role remains vital. It continues to transmit radio waves and television signals. The Colonius quietly performs its duty. It broadcasts to a vast audience. The Colonius a silent giant. It stands tall. It continues to shape the skyline of Cologne.
