Picture this. You stand before Belair Mansion a majestic Georgian plantation house. Its brickwork gleams in the sunlight. Expansive windows gaze out upon the manicured lawns. This is more than just a building. It whispers tales of governors and thoroughbreds. It’s a story etched in brick and time.
Belair Mansion holds a prominent place in Maryland’s history. Built around 1745 it was the summer residence of Samuel Ogle the provincial governor. Ogle and his wife Ann Tasker lived here. They ruled over a vast plantation. For generations the Ogle family called Belair home.
But Belair’s story is not solely one of genteel living. The mansion witnessed the ebb and flow of fortunes. After the Ogles it became a country club and later a girls’ school. Imagine the laughter and lessons echoing within its walls. During the Civil War the plantation faced significant changes. The Ogle family freed their 41 slaves. The war’s impact on the estate was profound. Financial struggles led to its sale.
Later James T Woodward a wealthy banker restored the mansion. He added a wing enhancing its grandeur. He was followed by his nephew William Woodward Sr. William Sr further expanded Belair. He also established the famed Belair Stud. The stud farm played a significant role in the history of thoroughbred horse racing. Gallant Fox and Omaha two Triple Crown winners hailed from here. This is a truly impressive feat achieved by only a few stables.
Sadly the Woodward family’s legacy ended tragically. William Woodward Jr was shot and killed at his Long Island estate. This shocking event marked the end of the Belair Stud. The estate’s story continues however. After changing hands Belair was acquired by the City of Bowie. It’s now a museum and stands as a testament to its rich history.
