From here at Bedford Creek Lookout, you can see how the creek descends 267 metres over its 22-kilometre course. It’s a sight to behold. The creek flows generally south and southeast. It eventually joins Glen Erskine Creek. Together, they form the Erskine Creek.

Did you know that Bedford Creek is officially designated as a river? It’s entirely within the Blue Mountains National Park. This park is a World Heritage-listed area.

Imagine the early bushwalkers. Harry Whaite and Jack Gibson explored this area between World War 1 and 2. They were part of the Warrigal Club. They ventured into the wild, discovering the beauty we see today.

Bedford Creek eventually becomes Erskine Creek downstream. This section of the creek is more remote. Bushwalkers often visit the lower section of Erskine Creek. It’s more accessible.

There are trails like the Jack Evans Track and the Tierney Track. They lead down to the creek. The Tierney Track is named after Fr Frank Tierney. He was another pioneering bushwalker.

Close to Bedford Creek Lookout there is the Ingar campground. It’s accessible via the Bedford Creek trail. The walk is about 5km south along Bedford Road from Woodford. There’s no vehicle access directly to the campground.

At Ingar campground there is a natural waterhole, surrounded by rock. It’s a great place for lunch or a swim. Remember to treat or boil water from the creek before drinking.

If you are planning to camp at Ingar campground you’ll need to carry in all your equipment. Bedford Creek trail is recommended for experienced riders who are extremely fit.

From Ingar campground, you can continue to Woodford along Bedford Creek trail. It’s a steep descent to the creek. The forest transforms into rainforest.

In spring, the open heath along the trail bursts with wildflowers. It’s a beautiful sight. As you stand here at Bedford Creek Lookout, think about the creek’s journey.
