Where does the Beaverdam Run begin its journey? This is a tale of two streams, both part of the larger Beaverdam Run story here in Ashburn. One branch of Beaverdam Run flows near Broad Run High School. Since 2016, Michael Dunn has diligently monitored this section, tracking the health of the stream’s tiny inhabitants and, more recently, keeping a close eye on sodium chloride levels. The other branch of Beaverdam Run trickles along a trail near Ashburn Park. It eventually meets the main section of Beaverdam Run, creating a confluence of water and stories. This section owes its monitoring history to Broad Run teacher Jen Dunn, who began benthic monitoring in 2024. Aimee Conrad and Jen also participate in Salt Watch here, a program started by student Anthony Santos. The story of Beaverdam Run isn’t just about water; it’s about the people who care for it, ensuring its health for years to come. Two streams, one name, a shared commitment to preservation.
