Battlefield High School

Opened in 2004, Battlefield High School stands as a testament to the rapid growth of Prince William County. This wasn’t just the ninth high school in the county; it was a response to a booming population. Battlefield High School quickly became overcrowded, even after the construction of nearby Patriot High School in 2011. The strain on resources and space was a real concern for students and parents alike, until Gainesville High School opened in 2021, easing some of the pressure. Battlefield High School serves a diverse community, drawing students from areas like Bull Run Mountain Estates, Dominion Valley, and Heritage Hunt. The school’s colors of purple, black, and silver are proudly displayed, and the bobcat mascot reflects the school’s spirit. Beyond academics, Battlefield High School offers specialized programs, like the Center for Information Technology. This program isn’t just for Battlefield students; it draws students from across the district who are interested in graphic design, networking, and hardware support. Another notable program is the Air Force JROTC, instilling leadership and character in cadets. The school has even faced its share of controversies. A candy cane food fight in 2010, initiated by the well-meaning “Christmas Sweater Club,” made headlines and led to detentions. The architecture of Battlefield High School is a blend of functionality and symbolism. The main building, security residence, and observation tower stand as practical necessities. The 75-foot Corinthian columns, painted to resemble marble, add a touch of grandeur. A frieze, depicting over 1,300 figures from the Civil War, wraps around the building’s perimeter. This detail, championed by the building’s designer, Montgomery Meigs, serves as a tribute to the veterans the building originally served. Within the walls of Battlefield High School, students have achieved remarkable feats. The school has been recognized as a “School of Excellence” four times by Prince William County. The football team clinched a state title in 2010. The girls’ soccer team secured three consecutive state titles from 2014-2016. The school’s robotics team also made their mark, achieving first place at the FIRST Championship in 2012. Battlefield High School, with its rich history, diverse programs, and accomplished students, continues to play a vital role in the Prince William County community.
