Bat Yam began as Bayit VeGan. This means “House and Garden”. It was founded in 1926. Eleven families sought a peaceful life south of Jaffa.

However, the 1929 Arab riots shattered this dream. An Arab mob attacked. The British authorities evacuated the families. Bayit VeGan was abandoned.

But the story of Bat Yam does not end there. In 1930, resettlement began. By 1936, it gained local municipal status. A year later, it was renamed Bat Yam. This translates to “daughter of the sea”.

By 1945, 2000 Jews called Bat Yam home. After Israel’s creation in 1948, Bat Yam grew rapidly. Mass immigration fueled its expansion. City status was granted in 1958.

Today, Bat Yam is a major city. Its population is about 130000. It covers over eight square kilometers. While known for seaside tourism, its economy thrives on industry and commerce.

Bat Yam is a coastal city atmosphere. It offers gastronomy and culture. Affordable hotels and family activities are available.

Two train stations opened in Bat Yam in 2011. These provide connections to cities throughout Israel. The Tel Aviv Light Rail connects Bat Yam to Tel Aviv.

Bat Yam is constantly developing. Skyscrapers rise over the city. It strives to preserve its economic independence. Urban renewal projects improve older buildings.
