Little did they know, one of them carried something truly extraordinary: a monstrance containing a consecrated Host, stolen from a church miles away. As they approached the spot where the Basilica now stands, the unimaginable happened. The mule carrying the Host stumbled, and the monstrance tumbled to the ground. But instead of landing in the dirt, it rose into the air, radiating a brilliant light that bathed the square in an ethereal glow. The Basilica of the Body of Christ was built to commemorate this miraculous event. It stands on the very spot where the Host descended, after the Bishop of Turin, Ludovico of the Romagnano’s, held up a chalice and prayed. Inside, you’ll find a marble slab marking the exact location of the miracle, a permanent reminder of the day the divine touched down in Turin.
