Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stand at the foot of a majestic structure, knowing you are about to embark on a journey of discovery? Here, standing before the Basilica di Superga, is that chance. The imposing Basilica di Superga, perched atop a hill overlooking the city of Turin, is a sight to behold. The Basilica was commissioned by Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy, in 1706. While under siege by French forces, the Duke climbed to the hilltop and made a vow to build a temple dedicated to Our Lady of Grace if she granted him victory. This vow, he kept, and the architectural masterpiece, designed by Filippo Juvarra, rose over the next fourteen years. Today, the Basilica not only stands as a monument to the Duke’s faith but also a testament to the power of the Savoy Dynasty. It offers a panoramic view of Turin, revealing the city’s sprawling urban landscape and the majestic Alps in the distance. But beneath the beauty of the Basilica lies a tragic tale. On May 4, 1949, the Grande Torino football team, returning from a match in Lisbon, crashed into the Basilica’s rear wall. This tragedy claimed the lives of all 31 passengers on board, forever etching the Basilica di Superga into sporting history. The Basilica di Superga is more than just a grand edifice; it is a place where history, faith, and tragedy intertwine to create a rich tapestry of stories. It is a must-visit for anyone exploring Turin, and even for those in search of solace in the heart of the city.
