The Basilica de Sant’Ana’s history is intertwined with the very fabric of this city. Originally built on land once owned by the Jesuits it witnessed the expulsion of the order in 1759. The property then changed hands several times serving as a governor’s residence a public school and even a smallpox hospital. Can you imagine such transformations? The building even housed a tramway workshop.
It was in 1894 that the old building was finally vacated. It became a federal troops’ barracks. However the Basilica de Sant’Ana’s true story begins here. During renovations a statue of Saint Anne was unearthed. This statue belonged to the demolished Jesuit chapel. It became the heart of a growing devotion that would transform the former barracks.
In 1895 the Basilica de Sant’Ana was officially established as a parish. The founding marked a momentous occasion for the people and clergy. The image of Saint Anne was solemnly transferred to a temporary chapel. This marked the beginning of the parish’s dedicated worship. The new parish encompassed a huge territory. It included what is now the northern region of Sao Paulo and even the city of Guarulhos.
Construction of the current Basilica de Sant’Ana began in 1906 under the seventh parish priest. Work was halted by the economic crisis of World War I but resumed in 1920. The towers were finally completed in 1941. The Basilica de Sant’Ana’s interior boasts incredible artistry. Sculptor Artur Pederzoli a native of Modena Italy created many of the Basilica’s stunning pieces. His work includes the Saint Anne statue the Stations of the Cross and other religious works. Pederzoli’s talent extended far beyond this building His work graces churches across Brazil and even the Vatican.
In 2008 the Basilica de Sant’Ana was elevated to the status of a minor basilica. A tremendous honor this recognition highlighted the church’s importance as a center of liturgical and pastoral activity. The Basilica de Sant’Ana continues its vital work serving the community through social outreach programs.
