Ever heard of a church named after a Swiss city, a Chinese dialect, and a German theologian? Right here in Vancouver, the Basel Hakka Lutheran Church stands as a testament to a unique blend of cultures and faith. The Basel Hakka Lutheran Church began its journey with Hakka-speaking migrants from the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia. Their church in Malaysia was part of the Lutheran World Federation. This connection led them to include “Lutheran” in the Vancouver church’s name. The church’s first pastor, Rev. Chong Yuk Kiong, had a fascinating background. He served in various roles within the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia, eventually becoming its Chief Pastor, a position later known as Bishop. Rev. Chong’s journey led him to Vancouver, where he became the first full-time pastor of the Basel Hakka Lutheran Church. After Rev. Chong’s passing, the church continued to thrive under the leadership of various pastors, including Rev. Yee Kim Vun, who previously taught at the Sabah Theological Seminary. In 2008, the Basel Hakka Lutheran Church moved to its current location on Nanaimo Street. The old church on Jackson Avenue, which had served many different congregations over the years, was decommissioned and eventually became a private residence. The move marked a new chapter for the Basel Hakka Lutheran Church, continuing its legacy of serving the Hakka community and beyond.
