Did you ever hear of a naval base at the “End of the World”? Here at Base Naval Ushuaia, or as it’s formally known, the Admiral Berisso Integrated Naval Base, you’re standing at the southernmost port of the Argentine Navy. Located in Ushuaia on the Beagle Channel, Base Naval Ushuaia isn’t just a vital port. It serves as the main Argentine logistics center for accessing Antarctica. This base’s namesake, Admiral Emilio Rodolfo Berisso, has a tragic story. He was assassinated in 1972 by the Revolutionary Armed Forces. Established in 1950 by President Juan Perón, Base Naval Ushuaia was intended as a support hub for ships operating in the southern sector. The deep waters of the Beagle Channel here at Base Naval Ushuaia allow even large vessels to dock. This is crucial for the yearly Antarctic Campaign, as Argentine Navy ships rely on this base for resupply and maintenance. Interestingly, the base’s jurisdiction also extends to the Ushuaia Naval Air Station, formerly the airport. From there, Naval Aviation Command aircraft and helicopters operate during exercises in the Southern Atlantic. The base commands a vast area. This includes the province of Santa Cruz, the Big Island of Tierra del Fuego, Isla de los Estados, and maritime spaces reaching the 60th parallel south. Its authority even reaches nearby bases like Rio Grande Naval Air Base and Puerto Deseado Naval Base. Base Naval Ushuaia is more than just a port; it’s a gateway to the icy continent and a key player in Argentina’s southern presence.
