The design team considered various options. A swing bridge remained the best solution. It offered speed of operation and efficient electrical energy use. The new swing bridge spans 40 meters. Its deck is cable-stayed with a single plane of four locked coil cables. These connect to a central, upstand spine beam.
A reclining pylon continues the main central beam. Its stiffness transfers cable loads into the piled substructure. The steel and timber deck rotates on a slewing bearing. This bearing is stressed onto a doughnut-shaped pile cap using 34 vertical Freyssibars. Eight piles support the bridge, positioned in a ring.
The slewing bearing and hydraulic motors are in a plant room. This room is created by the pile cap ring. Forming the pile cap this way housed the mechanics within the foundations. This reduced the excavation depth and kept the foundations above sea level.
The Bascule Bridge had to operate in wind speeds up to 60 km/h. It was also designed for vessel impact from both directions. It needed to swing freely to protect the mechanical equipment.
