Hidden in plain sight, Barriera Nuova whispers tales of Trieste’s vibrant past. Barriera Nuova isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a gateway. It was once a customs post at the foot of Via Commerciale. This marked the start of the historic road to Vienna, built in 1777. Originally, this area was part of the Scorcola district. The name “Barriera Nuova” originally referred to a small area at the base of Scorcola. But with Trieste’s urban development in the 19th century, Barriera Nuova expanded. Today it encompasses a densely populated area stretching from Via Giosuè Carducci and Coroneo, branching out along Via Cesare Battisti, almost all of Via Giulia, and the entire Viale XX Settembre, formerly known as Contrada dell’Acquedotto. Interestingly, Barriera Nuova is spread across three of Trieste’s seven municipal districts. Before 1934, the entrance to the city center led directly to a striking building. This building featured the original Casa Bizantina nestled within a tower-like structure, a true urban landmark. After its demolition, the area remained largely unchanged for decades. The construction of underground parking garages presented an opportunity. The city could reorganize the traffic flow and resurface the area. This also allowed them to reclaim space for a “Place of Poets,” a fitting tribute to Trieste’s literary heritage. It also provided the chance to construct a new Casa Bizantina. Barriera Nuova stands as a testament to Trieste’s ever-evolving urban landscape. It embodies the city’s ability to adapt and reinvent itself while preserving its historical echoes.
