What secrets does a name hold? Barnängsgatan whispers tales of children’s laughter and the hum of industry. Barnängsgatan, on Stockholm’s eastern Södermalm, stretches from Bondegatan down to Färgargårdstorget. Its name, a simplification of Barnstuguängen (Children’s Cottage Meadow), hints at its unique history. Imagine a children’s hospital planned by Danvikens Hospital in the late 16th century. This hospital, intended for the meadows near Hammarby Sjö, gave Barnängsgatan its name. While the hospital may not have materialized as envisioned, its legacy lives on in the street’s name. Barnängsgatan wasn’t always a bustling street. It began as a humble path traversing the fields, later becoming home to burgeoning industries. One such industry was Barnängens Manufaktur, a cloth factory founded in 1691 by Jacob Gavelius. The factory thrived, becoming Stockholm’s largest workplace by the 1780s, employing 640 workers. This industrial legacy is visible in the grand Barnängen’s Herrgård, built in 1782, which still stands on Barnängsgatan’s eastern side. The area has seen many transformations. The cloth factory closed in 1826. Later, the buildings housed Hillska school, and then a new factory producing ink. In the early 20th century, Stockholms Bomullsspinneri och Väfveri AB built a factory on Barnängsgatan, its red brick buildings a testament to the area’s industrial past. Barnängsgatan holds layers of history. From a planned children’s hospital to bustling factories, the street’s story reflects Stockholm’s growth and evolution.
