In 1990, Christopher Gaze founded Bard on the Beach. He wanted to provide affordable Shakespearean productions. These were to be of the finest quality. What started as a small venture has grown immensely. Bard on the Beach now welcomes an average annual attendance of 100,000. The festival is known for its high-quality artistic programming. It provides a welcoming experience for everyone.
Bard on the Beach has two modern performance tents. The Mainstage Theatre tent has 729 seats. It also boasts a state-of-the-art sound system. The open-ended design provides a unique experience. Actors perform against the backdrop of Vancouver’s natural beauty. The Douglas Campbell Theatre tent seats 260. This intimate space hosts a variety of plays. Here, you might find Shakespeare’s lesser-known works. Alternatively, you could see classics presented with less traditional staging. Contemporary plays with relevant themes also appear here.
Both tents are located near Bard Village. This lively gathering space allows patrons to meet. They can chat with fellow festival-goers. Educational events take place here, too. Concession and bar services are available. You can even browse the Bard Boutique.
Bard Education offers year-round opportunities to explore Shakespeare. There are programs for youth and emerging theatre artists. The general community can also participate. Summer Camps engage young people aged 6 to 18. Riotous Youth provides theatre education to young adults. Bard Studio offers free classes for professionals. Bard for Life lets adults play Shakespeare.
Bard on the Beach has grown significantly since its inception. In 1990, attendance was 6,000. By 2024, it had grown to 88,000. The operating budget has increased dramatically as well. It went from $35,000 in 1990 to over $10 million in 2024.

Bard on the Beach is a not-for-profit, charitable organization. It depends on a dedicated team. Exceptional actors, directors, designers, and technicians contribute each season.
