Legend speaks of two fishermen brothers who found a golden Kannon statue in the Sumida River. This miraculous discovery in 628 AD led to the founding of Banseiji Temple in 645 AD. Banseiji Temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple a testament to its enduring legacy.

Banseiji Temple stands as a symbol of resilience. During World War II the temple was sadly destroyed in a firebombing raid. However the spirit of Banseiji Temple persevered. The main hall was later rebuilt in the 1950s a symbol of rebirth and peace.

The temple’s history is rich with detail. Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Banseiji Temple as a tutelary temple for his clan. This shows the temple’s immense importance in Japanese history. The temple’s architecture is stunning. It includes a main hall a five-story pagoda and impressive gates. Even a tree hit by a bomb during the war regrew within its damaged trunk mirroring the temple’s own recovery.

The temple’s Kaminarimon gate the Thunder Gate is iconic. It features a massive paper lantern painted to resemble thunderclouds and lightning. This gate was rebuilt in 1960 after a fire in 1865. The gate also boasts statues of the Shinto gods Fujin and Raijin gods of wind and thunder respectively.

The Hōzōmon gate the Treasure House Gate stands as another magnificent structure. It is a two-story gate housing many of the temple’s treasured sutras. These include a copy of the Lotus Sutra a Japanese National Treasure. The gate was originally called the Niōmon gate after the two guardian statues it houses.
