High above Bankstown Airport, a lone Kittyhawk buzzed, a speck against the vast canvas of the 1940s sky. This wasn’t just any airport. Bankstown Airport quickly became a vital cog in the Allied war machine during World War II. Initially planned in 1929, the airport’s construction was fast-tracked under the shadow of war. In 1940, the land was acquired, becoming a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base. The urgency was palpable. Construction began even before the official paperwork was finalized. Bankstown Airport became a hive of activity. RAAF Headquarters was established here in December 1940. No. 2 Aircraft Park soon followed, making Bankstown their home until 1945. The airport’s strategic importance attracted the attention of the United States Army Air Forces. From 1942 to 1944, Bankstown Airport, affectionately nicknamed “Yankstown”, hosted the 35th and 49th Pursuit Groups. These skilled pilots, flying their iconic P-40 Kittyhawks, patrolled the skies, protecting Sydney from potential threats. But Bankstown Airport’s contribution to the war effort wasn’t limited to aerial defense. The de Havilland Australia factory, established on site in 1942, churned out Mosquito combat aircraft. These agile and versatile planes played a crucial role in various theaters of war. Even after the war’s end, Bankstown Airport remained a vital hub. It transitioned from a military base to become Sydney’s primary general aviation airport. The echoes of its wartime history, however, still linger. The control tower, a silent sentinel, stands as a testament to the airport’s crucial role in World War II. This tower is now a listed heritage site. It whispers stories of hurried takeoffs, anxious landings, and the constant hum of activity that defined Bankstown Airport during those turbulent years. Today, Bankstown Airport continues to serve the city, handling charter flights, cargo operations, and training future generations of pilots. It has evolved with the times, but its past remains etched into its runways and buildings.
