Its size and diverse plant life make it a haven for native wildlife. The reserve is a sanctuary for Honeyeaters, Spinebills, Finches, and Wrens. They feed, breed, and shelter among the coastal scrub and rainforest pockets. Small mammals like the Long-nosed Bandicoot and Brown Marsupial Mouse find refuge in rock crevices and fallen logs. Lizards and snakes bask on the rocky platforms, ever watchful for hungry Kestrels soaring overhead. Within the headland’s rugged terrain lie vertical doleritic dykes. One notable formation is St. Michael’s Cave. It serves as an essential habitat for Micro Bats. A short, but relatively challenging, loop track takes about 45 minutes to complete. It leads you to the summit. You can find the trailhead at the corner of North Avalon Road and Marine Parade. Look for the path with signage towards the beach. The walk to Bangalley Head was also historically significant. It served as a lookout post during World War II. Today, the trig station at the top stands as a testament to its strategic importance. The original trig station dates back to the 1880s. It has been replaced at least once since then.
