How about stepping back in time to 1956? That’s when the story of the Banaras Locomotive Works or BLW began right here in Varanasi. It was initially known as Diesel Locomotive Works or DLW.
Today we stand before a major production unit of Indian Railways. It is known for manufacturing electric locomotives. In 2020, DLW was renamed Banaras Locomotive Works.
The Banaras Locomotive Works started by producing locomotives based on ALCO designs. Interestingly in 2006, some manufacturing was outsourced to Mumbai. This shows how BLW adapted to changing needs.
Then in March 2019, BLW achieved a milestone. It developed India’s first bi-mode locomotive called the WDAP-5. Now the Banaras Locomotive Works primarily produces WAP-7 and WAG-9 electric locomotives.
But the story of Banaras Locomotive Works doesn’t end within India. BLW exports locomotives to other countries. These include Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. They also supply to users within India. These include ports, power plants and private railways.
The Banaras Locomotive Works complex is vast. The BLW main gate is quite a sight. It stands 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide. The walls display beautiful engine pictures. Nearby residents enjoy the calm and green environment.
Inside is the BLW office. Real rail engines decorate the front. The National flag shows pride in their work. Customers from around the world come here. They buy engines for their countries.
BLW holds certifications like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. It has also won awards for excellence. Artificial waterfalls enhance the office’s beauty. This creates a world-class experience.
The Loco Shed is where manufacturing happens. Different sections work on wheels and engines. Assembled parts come together near the west gate. Here you can see the trail of these engines.
In 2020, Banaras Locomotive Works produced a record number of electric engines. This happened even during the nationwide lockdown. There were 310 locomotives produced including 272 electric ones. In July alone, they made 31 locomotives.
For its employees, the Banaras Locomotive Works has a large colony. It spans almost 400 hectares. It includes schools, a movie theater and a club. Over 4000 people live here.
The colony is known as the second greenest place in Varanasi. It has many trees and a clean environment. The first engine ‘Kundan’ is showcased in the colony’s center.
The colony also boasts the Surya Sarovar pond. It has beautiful stairs and water cleaning techniques. People gather here in the evening. They celebrate festivals like Chhath puja here.
The colony also offers parks, a cinema hall and a swimming pool. There is also a gym, a golf club and basketball courts. These facilities contribute to the well-being of the workers.
The story of Banaras Locomotive Works reflects India’s progress in rail technology. From diesel to electric, BLW continues to power the nation’s railways. It also contributes to the world.
