Picture those charming little wooden houses. They line the streets of Bällsta a picturesque Stockholm suburb. Built in the 1940s they whisper tales of a simpler time. This is Bällsta a place where history and tranquility intertwine.

Bällsta wasn’t always a quiet residential area. It began its life as a farm Bällsta gård. Records show its existence as far back as 1315. The farm was later owned by Danvikens hospital. Imagine the farmhands working the land centuries ago. Their lives were worlds apart from those of today’s residents.

The main farmhouse still stands. It’s been expanded over the years. A large glass veranda was added in 1871. This gave it the impressive look it retains today. The farm’s history is deeply interwoven with Bällsta’s development. It’s a reminder of a time before the neat rows of little houses.

In 1905-1908 the first plots of land were sold off. This marked the beginning of Bällsta villastad. Stockholm city only purchased the remaining parts of the estate much later in 1938. The city then decided to build the small house district. Around 200 houses were built using a self-build scheme. Residents built their own homes with materials provided by the city. This unique project shaped Bällsta’s distinctive character. The small plot sizes prevented later subdivisions. The area retained its original charm.

The houses themselves are unique. They are mostly one-story wooden houses. They are uniformly spaced along the streets. This gives the area its planned layout. The gardens are equally important. They add to the area’s character. Bällsta’s carefully planned streets and gardens were declared a valuable cultural environment in Stockholm’s overview plan.

Nearby sits Solvalla race track. Opened in 1927 it adds another layer to Bällsta’s story. This is a place where past and present meet. Where quiet suburban life coexists with the excitement of horse racing. Bällsta is more than just a suburb. It’s a unique blend of history architecture and community. It has remained true to its origins. This is the legacy of Bällsta. A testament to careful planning and community spirit. It is a place I hope you’ll remember.
