A bronze baifo stares out at the ocean. This is Baifo the sculpture by Emiliano Hernandez. It stands proudly in Puerto del Rosario. Did you know this artwork weighs approximately 85 kilos?
Baifo the sculpture is more than just a statue. It commemorates BinterCanarias’ first flight to Fuerteventura twenty years ago. The airline donated it as part of a series of special actions. It all began with a contest Pontunombreaqui.com. Customers chose the name Baifo for one of their planes. This unique designation inspired the sculpture’s name NT 202.
Initially Baifo stood on Avenida Marítima. However it now sits on the pedestrian street Primero de Mayo. The move increased public accessibility. The relocation was even a public event. The mayor and council members were present. Representatives from Binter the airline were there too.
Emiliano Hernandez a Fuerteventura-based artist created the work. FunchoEscultura a local company assisted with its creation. Hernandez’s art is not limited to Baifo. He created the colossal figures of Guise and Ayose at the Betancuria viewpoint. His work is found throughout Fuerteventura including a group of goats near the town hall. His talent blossomed despite his parents’ doubts. They worried he’d starve as an artist.
Hernandez’s journey took him far from Fuerteventura. He spent many years in South America working and teaching. He made a Christ figure for a Bogota cemetery. He also created a Byzantine mosaic for the Bogota Cathedral. He returned to Fuerteventura in 1999. His art now reflects his rich experiences his deep connection to his homeland.
Baifo is a symbol of Fuerteventura’s unique culture. It represents the island’s spirit and the power of collaboration between art and business. It is a testament to Emiliano Hernandez’s artistic skill. It is also a reminder of BinterCanarias’ commitment to the island. So look closely at Baifo.
