How rugged and wild could Baggensudden have appeared in the late 19th century? Today, we stand before a picturesque neighborhood. Let me transport you back to a time before the villas and manicured gardens. Baggensudden, a peninsula jutting into Baggensfjärden, was then a wild expanse. Think dramatic, rocky terrain, untouched and pristine. This land belonged to the Erstavik Estate until 1889. That’s when financier K.A. Wallenberg, with a vision for a seaside haven, purchased Baggensudden. He envisioned a new type of community for Stockholm: Saltsjöbaden. The first brave soul to build here was Theodor Nygren. His grand summer house, Villa Nygren, completed in 1892, even lent its name to the area, then dubbed “Nygrensudde”. Imagine the charm of that first house amidst the rugged beauty of Baggensudden! Over the years, more residents followed, drawn by Wallenberg’s vision and the area’s serene beauty. And that, my friends, is how Baggensudden transformed from a wild peninsula into the charming neighborhood you see today, a testament to the enduring appeal of seaside living.
