A ripple of excitement, a shared anticipation. That’s the feeling one gets standing before the Avivamento Biblico in São Bernardo do Campo. Avivamento Biblico. The name itself evokes a sense of renewal, a return to biblical principles. The story of Avivamento Biblico begins in Brazil, not here in São Paulo, but its impact has rippled across the nation. By the end of the 1950s, just thirteen years after its founding, the movement had grown to encompass six churches, sixty congregations, and roughly three thousand members. Avivamento Biblico was also taking root in Cassilândia, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Araraquara, São Paulo, with seeds sown in Bahia as well. The first General Conventions of Avivamento Biblico took place in this era. In January 1956, a meeting was held in Jaçanã, initially called the “First General Meeting of Workers”. This gathering eventually became known as the “General Convention.” This convention saw the creation of the “National Council,” later renamed the “Board of Directors,” the “Executive Council,” and finally, the “General Council.” The 1960s were marked by the autonomy of various congregations and a struggle for a unified statute within Avivamento Biblico. In 1962, the General Convention achieved legal status, aiming to represent all churches. At the 1968 General Convention in Santo André, a “standard statute” was established, linking all Avivamento Biblico churches to the General Convention. The conclusion of this convention was marked by an extraordinary manifestation of the Holy Spirit, a powerful renewal that invigorated attendees. In Paranavaí, Paraná, in 1972, the XVI General Convention definitively approved the “unified statute.” This formalized centralized governance. Ecclesiastical Regions were established, overseen by Regional Councils elected at Regional Conventions. The ministry became itinerant. A missions movement took hold. “National Biblical Revival Missions Day” was established, coinciding with the movement’s founding date: September 7th. The established regions were the Central Region (São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Bahia), the West Region (western São Paulo, Mato Grosso, and Goiás), and the South Region (Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul). Beyond these regions, Missionary Fields were recognized as congregations distant from and directly linked to the General Department of Evangelism and Missions.
