Consider the slaves who arrived here. They yearned for the right to practice their faith. Now, we stand before the Auwal Masjid. This mosque represents their struggle, their resilience, and their unwavering devotion.

The Auwal Masjid is South Africa’s first and oldest mosque. It stands proudly in the Bo-Kaap neighborhood of Cape Town. Construction finished in 1794. This makes it a truly historic landmark.

Let’s step back in time to the late 18th century. Cape Town was under British occupation. Coridon van Ceylon, a freed Black Muslim slave, owned this land. His daughter, Saartjie van de Kaap, inherited it. She then donated it so that a mosque could be built. This act was an incredible moment. It allowed the community to come together and worship freely.

The Auwal Masjid became more than just a building. It became a symbol. It showed the recognition of Islam and the freedom of slaves to worship. It became a place where Cape Muslim traditions were taught. It was also where the Arabic-Afrikaans language first took root.

Tuan Guru, also known as Imam Abdullah Qadi Abdus Salaam, was the first imam. He was a remarkable man. He was a religious leader and political prisoner. The Dutch incarcerated Tuan Guru on Robben Island. It is the same island where Nelson Mandela was later imprisoned. While imprisoned, Tuan Guru wrote the entire Quran from memory. This Quran is now on display inside the Auwal Masjid.

Tuan Guru also used the Auwal Masjid as a madrassah. It was a religious school. Here, he taught children and adults about Islam. After Tuan Guru’s death, Achmad of Bengal, Saartjie van de Kaap’s husband, became imam. His family held this position until 1980.

The Auwal Masjid has undergone several renovations over the years. These occurred in 1907 and 1936. Despite these changes, it remains true to its original purpose. It is still a vibrant center for the Muslim community.

The Auwal Masjid faced a dispute in 1807. A portion of the congregation split off. They then formed Cape Town’s second mosque. It is the Palm Tree Mosque on Long Street.

Today, the Auwal Masjid stands as a testament to faith, freedom, and community. It reminds us of the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us. It also reminds us of the enduring power of the human spirit. Take a moment to appreciate the rich history and cultural significance of this special place. The Auwal Masjid continues to inspire generations.
