From this vantage point on Petrisberg the view is breathtaking. The Aussichtspunkt Petrisberg offers a panoramic vista of Trier. It’s a place steeped in history.

The Aussichtspunkt Petrisberg has witnessed centuries unfold. From Roman military occupation to a World War II prisoner of war camp. Its strategic location has always been coveted. In 30 BC the Romans established a short-lived military camp here. This was before they founded Augusta Treverorum the predecessor to modern Trier. It was considered the oldest Roman military camp in Germany until a similar camp was found near Hermeskeil. This little-known fact underscores the importance of Petrisberg’s strategic position.

For centuries the Petrisberg served as pastureland. The names Lämmerwiese and Geißberg still evoke its past use as a sheep and goat pasture. Medieval wine cultivation flourished on its slopes. The area’s history is rich and multifaceted. Evidence of this is found in the remnants of a Roman era hill tomb. Known as Franzensknüppchen it’s a tangible link to Trier’s Roman past. Legend says that Franz von Sickingen used it to bombard Trier in 1522. This however is impossible given the range of weapons in those days.

In the 1930s the Petrisberg was transformed into a major military complex. The infamous Stalag XII D was housed in the Kemmelkaserne built in 1938. Jean-Paul Sartre the renowned French writer was one of its prisoners. After World War II French forces occupied the area expanding it to include a military hospital.

The Aussichtspunkt Petrisberg is more than just a viewpoint. It’s a living testament to layers of history. The Landesgartenschau in 2004 transformed it into a modern residential and recreational area. The Petrisberg has seen conflict. It has been a place of military significance. But today the Aussichtspunkt Petrisberg offers peace. It offers stunning views. It’s a place to reflect on Trier’s long and captivating journey. A place to simply be. And enjoy the stunning view.
