A century ago today. A linden tree was planted. This is the Aussichtsplattform Schillerlinde.
This viewpoint boasts breathtaking views. It overlooks the Neckar Valley. East and west the panorama unfolds. The platform’s history is as captivating as its vistas.
On May 12 1905 the Schillerlinde was dedicated. It marked the 100th anniversary of Friedrich Schiller’s death. A grand ceremony took place. Prominent members of the Verschönerungsverein Stuttgart and the local community attended. Speeches and poems were given. One poem even included a plea to preserve this beautiful spot.
The original linden tree suffered greatly. A lightning strike in 1965 caused extensive damage. Fungi infiltrated the wood threatening to break the tree. Experts from the city’s gardening department performed a tree surgery. They carefully treated the tree. The trunk and roots remain exposed. Iron bars and wires support the split trunk and branches. Amazingly the Schillerlinde continues to thrive.
Sadly vandalism and late-night gatherings caused much damage to the viewing platform. The protective shelter was irreparably damaged. It was removed in 2005. Extensive renovations followed. New benches were installed. Access was restricted to prevent cars from parking there. But most significantly the view was cleared. Neighbors generously allowed the removal of trees and bushes. This restored the magnificent panorama.
The Aussichtsplattform Schillerlinde was reopened on June 17 2005. This time the celebration was more understated. The deputy chairman of the Verschönerungsverein gave a moving speech. The city government was represented. A youth music group played festive music. Another young linden tree was planted. This one is a younger sapling to ensure the tradition continues.
Today we stand on this very spot. We see the same stunning views that have delighted visitors for over a century. The Aussichtsplattform Schillerlinde. It is a testament to the enduring beauty of Stuttgart and the power of community effort.
