On the shimmering coast of Trieste, where the Adriatic Sea kisses the Italian shore, stands the Bagno Ausonia. It’s more than just a beach resort. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of history, leisure, and the enduring spirit of Trieste. The Ausonia wasn’t always the concrete and steel structure you see today. In the early 1900s, a simpler “military bath” made of wood graced this spot. After the war, architect S. Franceschina transformed it, opening its doors to civilians and renaming it the “Stabilimento Balneare Savoia.” The 1930s witnessed a construction boom in Italy. Amidst this fervor, the “GHIRA” construction company erected the modern Ausonia. Its reinforced concrete frame, supported by pilotis, was a testament to the innovative architectural trends of the time. The Ausonia was designed not just for swimming, but also for the increasingly popular practice of heliotherapy. The inclusion of a 50m x 25m swimming pool elevated the Ausonia to first-class status. It became a venue for major sporting events, adding to its allure. In 1936, the Savoia and the Ausonia merged, becoming a single entity connected by piers. The newly christened “Bagno Ausonia” was born. Disaster struck in August 1954 when a fierce storm battered the structure. The Scarpa company, led by engineer Scarpa and architect Zocconi, stepped in to restore and expand the beloved Bagno Ausonia. Today, the Ausonia retains its historical charm while offering modern amenities like a bar, showers, and even card rentals for a leisurely afternoon. It remains a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, drawn to its rich history and prime location near Trieste’s central station and the iconic Lanterna lighthouse. The Ausonia embodies the Triestine spirit, a blend of tradition and modernity, where the past and present seamlessly intertwine.
