How do you design a modern learning space within a historic shell? The Aule R building here at the Politecnico di Torino offers a fascinating answer. This building, inaugurated in 2021, represents the university’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities while respecting its architectural heritage. The Aule R project involved a complex renovation of a former industrial building. The challenge was to seamlessly blend contemporary design with the constraints of preserving the historical facade. The architects found a brilliant solution by keeping the characteristic sawtooth profile of the original structure. This resulted in a striking visual contrast between the old and the new. The Aule R are not just a pretty facade. They house a variety of learning spaces designed to enhance the student experience. Inside, you’ll find four large lecture halls, each accommodating 300 students, and four smaller classrooms for 150. The building also includes two dedicated study halls, recognizing the need for spaces where students can focus and collaborate outside of lectures. The design cleverly incorporates irregular spaces and visual corridors throughout the building. These not only add visual interest but also provide glimpses into the historic Ex Fucine building, adding another layer of connection to the university’s past.
