Imagine a tipsy musician. He tumbles into a plague pit, only to be rescued by the sound of his own bagpipes. This is the legend of Marx Augustin. It is also the story behind the Augustinbrunnen.

Hello everyone. Today, we’re standing before the Augustinbrunnen. This fountain commemorates the legendary “Dear Augustin”. It is located on Augustinplatz in Vienna’s 7th district. The Augustinbrunnen is more than just a fountain. It’s a symbol of Viennese resilience and humor in the face of adversity.

Let’s delve into the story of this special place. In the 17th century, this area was a bustling marketplace known as Strohplatzl. But beneath the surface lay a dark secret. A plague pit. During the devastating plague epidemic of 1679, the area became a mass grave. Legend says that Marx Augustin, a popular bagpiper, was mistakenly thrown into this pit. He was thought to be dead from the plague. However, Augustin was merely drunk. Awakening in the pit, he began playing his bagpipes. The music alerted rescuers and saved his life.

The story of Augustin became a symbol of hope. It showed resilience during a dark time in Vienna’s history. The idea of building a monument to Augustin arose in the mid-19th century. However, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that the Augustinbrunnen became a reality.

The sculptor Hans Scherpe was commissioned to create the fountain. Karl Lueger, the mayor of Vienna, unveiled it on September 4, 1908. The original fountain featured a bronze figure of Augustin. He was depicted playing his bagpipes. It quickly became a beloved landmark.

Sadly, the bronze figure didn’t survive the Second World War. It was melted down for the war effort. A new statue was needed to replace it. Josef Humplik created the current sandstone figure. It was unveiled on October 18, 1952. This new statue reflected the artistic style of the 1950s.

Take a closer look at the Augustinbrunnen. Notice the inscription on the base. It reads: “Augustin Fountain. Erected by the municipality of Vienna under Mayor Dr. Karl Lueger in the year 1908.” On the back, another inscription says: “I was gone, now you have me again, and now listen to my songs.” Also observe the ornaments. They depict vines around the waterspouts.

The Augustinbrunnen has undergone changes. In March 2022, parts of the fountain and the statue were removed. This was due to the construction of the U2/U5 subway lines. They were temporarily stored at the Naschmarkt. The statue is scheduled for renovation. The Augustinbrunnen will be reinstalled around 2027 or 2028.

The Augustinbrunnen reminds us of Vienna’s past. It reflects the city’s ability to find humor and hope. Even in the face of tragedy. The story of the “Dear Augustin” lives on. His music continues to resonate through the ages. It reminds us to celebrate life. It urges us to persevere even in the darkest of times.

As you leave the Augustinbrunnen, remember the story of Marx Augustin. Remember his music. Carry with you the spirit of Vienna. A spirit of resilience, humor, and hope.
