In 1884, a bustling camp emerged at the meeting point of Hacking River and Kangaroo Creek. It was christened “Audley,” a nod to Lord Audley’s survey camp of 1864. This, my friends, is the heart of the Audley Boatshed story. Audley Boatshed isn’t just a place to rent a boat. It’s a portal to a rich past. The Audley Boatshed area was originally home to the Dharawal tribe. Their lives intertwined with the abundant resources of the river and estuary. Evidence of their presence remains in the middens, rock shelters, and ancient carvings. Fast forward to 1796, when Bass and Flinders charted these waters. The area, however, remained largely untouched, unsuitable for farming. The year 1879 marked a turning point. Royal Park was established, with the New South Wales Zoological Society envisioning a haven for exotic flora and fauna. Dams transformed the Georges River, and by 1883, the Hacking River became a playground for pleasure boats. This tradition continues at Audley Boatshed today. The original Audley camp featured a dock, boat house, jetty, and a pavilion. Stables, stores, and even a smithy were part of the scene. Ornamental trees, including Red Cedar, Catalpa Oaks, and Moreton Bay Figs, added to the charm. The early 1900s saw a shift towards resource extraction. A sawmill arose, and weekend camping gained popularity. The Great Depression brought a wave of squatters, living off the land. Audley became a refuge for around 34 camps during this period. World War II brought a pause to Audley’s development. The postwar era brought much-needed funds for renovations and repairs. In 1954, the park received royal recognition, becoming “Royal National Park.” The creation of the National Parks and Wildlife Service in 1967 marked another turning point. A focus on conservation saw the removal of many structures. Audley Boatshed stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this unique location.
