Initially, Auburn North Public School began with humble roots. There were just two rooms. The principal’s office doubled as a classroom. Even the weather shed served as learning space. Henry Lovell was the first principal. He guided the school through its early years.

By 1900, Auburn North Public School had grown significantly. The student population reached 350. Classrooms were crowded. In 1912, the school introduced dual desks. Each desk accommodated two pupils. Despite this classes still held nearly 50 students per class.

The school expanded rapidly. By 1930, Auburn North Public School had 1300 pupils. This growth strained resources. In 1913, six teachers shared five classrooms. Some classes had over 70 pupils. To alleviate the overcrowding two wooden portable buildings were added in 1914.

In 1915 Auburn North Public School was divided. It then had two departments: infants and primary. By 1917, the school had eight rooms. These rooms had 400 seats for 520 pupils and 10 teachers. A new two-story building opened in 1925. This added 10 classrooms to the primary department. Four classrooms were added to the infants building.

Crossing Parramatta Road posed a danger to students. In 1940, construction began on a pedestrian overpass. Parents had long campaigned for this safety measure. In the 1960s, the overpass was meshed over. This further enhanced pupil safety.

Auburn’s changing population brought new needs. In 1970, Auburn North Public School appointed its first ESL teacher. This addressed the needs of students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. In 1979, the school gained new facilities. These included a library a canteen and a hall.
