Auburn Maintenance Centre

Nestled amidst the bustling industrial landscape of Auburn, the Auburn Maintenance Centre stands as a testament to modern railway engineering. This isn’t just a depot; it’s the beating heart of Sydney’s sprawling rail network. The Auburn Maintenance Centre, built in 2010, houses a vast 14,000 square meter maintenance shed. Imagine seven maintenance roads humming with activity, plus additional roads for shunting and storage. This state-of-the-art facility boasts an automatic train wash plant, an underfloor wheel lathe, and sophisticated wheel condition monitoring equipment. The Auburn Maintenance Centre isn’t just about nuts and bolts. It’s a crucial hub for Sydney Trains, strategically positioned in Auburn. It’s home to the Waratah, SGT, and Millennium trains, which make up almost half of Sydney’s passenger fleet. The constant hum of activity at the Auburn Maintenance Centre speaks volumes about its importance. Operating 24/7, it provides on-site maintenance, technical support, and operational expertise. Approximately 150 staff members keep the wheels turning, including mobile technicians who provide support to the trains in service. The Auburn Maintenance Centre also plays a key role in training. Four crew training simulators were installed as part of the Rolling Stock PPP. These simulators include a full-motion driver cab and a fixed guard cab. This allows Sydney Trains to provide ongoing training and support the introduction of new fleets. Inside the Auburn Maintenance Centre, the Waratah trains undergo regular maintenance. These double-decker, eight-car trains are equipped with features like improved accessibility, smart air conditioning, and advanced passenger information systems. They also boast enhanced safety features, including CCTV cameras and improved carriage design.
