Imagine a school opening its doors with nothing. No desks. No books. According to the principal, Vincent Hendricks, there wasn’t even a cane. Just a prayer and a hymn. That was Athlone Secondary School back then. S. V. Petersen, the school’s founder, started with 89 learners. He was a South African poet, author, and educator. Petersen dedicated 28 years of his life to Athlone Secondary School. He stayed until his retirement in 1974.
Petersen chose the school’s motto carefully. It reflects the school’s high aspirations. Paul Heneke, a friend from Trafalgar High School, translated it into Latin. “Nihil sed optimus”.
Athlone Secondary School quickly became a sought-after institution. Students came from all over. They came from Durban, Pretoria, and even Windhoek.
Athlone High School excelled in academics, sports, and the arts. Lyn Hanmer was one of its notable alumni. She became the first woman of colour to graduate in engineering from UCT.
Athlone Secondary School played a role in the fight against apartheid. The class of 1976 was ahead of its time. More than 400 of the school’s 670 pupils protested against the government’s imposition of Afrikaans in black schools. These learners were ready to sacrifice their year. They wanted to gain a better education.
Dulcie September, a political activist, also attended Athlone Secondary School. The school is honoring her legacy with an exhibition. Athlone Secondary School is also renewing its partnership with the Dulcie September School in Paris.
