Beneath the stars, a silent sentinel stands. The Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw. It is more than just a building. It’s a gateway to the cosmos. Founded in 1825, the Astronomical Observatory has been a beacon of scientific research. It has provided educational work for almost two centuries.
Imagine the dedication of those early astronomers. Franciszek Armiński, the first director, charting the heavens. He used meridian circles for astrometric observations. He was keeping time with unparalleled precision. These instruments were vital for geodetic measurements too.
But the Astronomical Observatory’s story isn’t just one of scientific discovery. It’s a story of resilience. During World War I, essential equipment was moved to Russia. This ensured its safety amidst the chaos.
Later, in 1937, an observing station opened on Pip Ivan peak. This peak is now in Ukraine. It was part of the White Elephant building. The main instrument was a 33 cm astrograph made by Grubb Parsons. Sadly, the station was abandoned after the Soviet invasion in 1939. It only produced a single research paper.
The German invasion of Poland brought more challenges. The University of Warsaw closed. But the occupiers reopened the Astronomical Observatory. Research was restricted. Time keeping became the priority. During the Warsaw Uprising, the staff had to leave. German soldiers burned the building.
Yet, from the ashes, the Astronomical Observatory rose again. It was re-established in Kraków in February 1945. The Warsaw building was rebuilt. Astronomers returned. An observing station was established in Ostrowik village near Warsaw. In 1973, a 60 cm telescope opened there.
Post-war, the Astronomical Observatory shifted its focus to astrophysics. Włodzimierz Zonn and Stefan Piotrowski were key figures. Bohdan Paczyński, a junior colleague, also became well-known.
In 1991, Andrzej Udalski built the first CCD camera in Poland for the Ostrowik telescope. This advancement revolutionized observing capabilities. In 1992, Udalski and Paczyński started the OGLE project. They used the Swope telescope in Chile. By 1996, a dedicated 1.3 m telescope was opened for OGLE. Grzegorz Pojmański started the ASAS survey. It was based on an idea by Paczyński.
Today, the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw continues its vital work. Its research staff includes esteemed professors and dedicated PhD students. They are recognized worldwide for their contributions to astronomy.
The Astronomical Observatory also operates the northern station in Ostrowik. It serves mainly for education. The southern station is at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. It is one of the best astronomical sites in the world.
The building itself, a late-classical structure, has a palace-like character. Ionic pilasters and rustication adorn the lower storeys. Corinthian pilasters decorate the upper levels. Although the interior isn’t open to the public, it houses laboratories and workshops.
So, as you stand before this building, remember its history. Remember the astronomers who gazed at the stars. They sought to unravel the universe’s mysteries. The Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw is a testament to human curiosity. It is also a symbol of perseverance.
