In 1926 a tent on Ross Avenue marked the humble beginnings of Bethel Temple. Imagine the fervor the first worshippers felt under that canvas. This is the Assembly of God Church Bethel Temple a cornerstone of Tampa’s spiritual landscape. It wasn’t always a grand edifice. It started as a small evangelistic church. It was originally called Foursquare Tabernacle. The name changed to Bethel Temple in 1941. The church faced many trials. A hurricane in 1926 damaged its tent. But the congregation persevered. They built a new structure. This building was at 2204 Highland Avenue. The church faced periods of both growth and transition. Different pastors guided the congregation through various eras. Under Rev. Gordon Matheny a new sanctuary was built in 1977. It seated nearly 800 people. The church expanded purchasing more land. A two-story educational annex was added in 1985. Bethel Temple continued to grow. Under Pastor Mike Tedder the church acquired the final parcel of land to own an entire city block. Today this same church is known as Crosswind Church. Its history reflects resilience faith and a vibrant community. This remarkable church continues its ministry. It serves the Tampa community and beyond. The Assembly of God Church Bethel Temple stands as a testament to enduring faith and enduring growth. It is a place where the community gathers to celebrate their belief. The church’s journey from a tent to a city block is a compelling testament to its enduring faith. The current pastors Pastor John and Milena Absher continue the legacy. They carry forward the mission of love service prayer and compelling others to believe. This is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the spirit of Tampa.
