After months of meeting at Eduardo’s house, Paulo Leivas Macalão took a leap of faith. He rented a small hall on Rua José Machado. This marked the humble beginning of what would become Assembléia de Deus Ministério Madureira.
The work grew. Months later a larger space was needed. The church moved to Rua Borborema. On November 15, 1929, the Assembléia de Deus de Madureira was officially founded. The congregation continued expanding. Another move to a larger hall at number 13 on the same street became necessary.
The church’s influence spread. It relocated to Rua João Vicente. In 1941, it gained legal recognition. The church remained there until May 1, 1953. A majestic temple was inaugurated. It became the headquarters of the Ministério de Madureira. It was located on Rua Carolina Machado in Madureira, Rio de Janeiro.
Paulo Leivas Macalão played a key role in establishing the church in the nation’s capital. He received information from Heráclito Menezes about the Pentecostal revival in Belém. A letter was sent to missionary Gunnar Vingren requesting the establishment of the Assembleia de Deus. This was in the Federal District in 1924. Paulo Leivas Macalão became the second member baptized by Vingren. He also became the first secretary of the newly founded church.
Missionary Gunnar Vingren guided Paulo Leivas Macalão to evangelize the suburbs of Central Brazil. He began in Realengo, Bangu and Santa Cruz. In Madureira, the work flourished. The hall on Rua João Vicente became the headquarters. This was due to its rapid growth.
In 1930, Gunnar Vingren ordained Paulo Leivas Macalão as pastor. This occurred during a visit from Swedish Pentecostal leader Lewi Petrus. Macalão inaugurated the first Assemblies of God temple in Bangu on January 1, 1933. He expanded evangelization to other states.
