Here at Aspnässkolan in Järfälla a story whispers from the past. A story of transformation and growth. Aspnässkolan began its life in 1846. It wasn’t always a school. Imagine a roadside inn a vägkrog. This is where travelers paused on the old Enköpingsvägen.
Now, envision that inn transforming into Jakobsbergs skola. Järfälla socken needed its own school. Before 1846, education was shared with Spånga socken. Filip Bogislaus von Schwerin offered land for a school. The location wasn’t central enough. Instead, the municipality bought land at Aspnäs from von Schwerin. The price included a building. This building was the former inn.
In 1845 the building was renovated for school use. The first lessons at Aspnässkolan were held on May 10 1846. For a year, the churchwarden Erik Mellberg taught the children. The first official teacher Ludvig Ulric Öberg arrived in April 1847. He was also the church bell ringer and organist. His salary was 53 riksdaler. He also received grain, pasture for a cow, land, and free housing.
Aspnässkolan changed over the years. In 1866 the schoolroom was renovated. The roof was raised. Larger windows were installed. In 1878 the schoolhouse was extended. In 1901 a new school building was constructed. The old school building was sold.
Interestingly, the old building wasn’t destroyed. In 1959, it was moved to Ängsjö friluftsgård. Parts of the timber were used to build a wind shelter. Today, it serves as a rest stop.
The new building from 1901 included classrooms. There was a classroom for younger children. There were also rooms for the teacher and a dental clinic. In 1936, Jakobsbergs skola was renamed. It became Aspnäs skola.
In 1945 another new, larger school was built. The old school was renovated at the same time. By the 1950s the school was overcrowded again. In 1957 the school was expanded. Eighteen classrooms were added. In 1961 buildings were added for the Järfälla municipal secondary school. Today, they are used for the lower grades.
Today Aspnässkolan is a primary school for students in grades F-6. About 275 students attend Aspnässkolan. The school has a high teacher-to-student ratio. This allows more individual attention. Aspnässkolan focuses on creating a safe environment. It also aims to help students reach their full potential. The school provides support both inside and outside the classroom. There is a student council. There is a food council and a school council. Parents are also invited.
Aspnässkolan stands as a symbol of Järfälla’s commitment to education. From its humble beginnings as a roadside inn. Aspnässkolan has grown into a modern school. It continues to serve the community. It is also nurturing the next generation.
