Imagine strolling along a leafy path. This is the Asbach-Grünzug in Weimar. A marvel of urban planning it’s a green belt stretching across the northern side of Weimar’s Nordvorstadt.
The Asbach-Grünzug wasn’t always here. Its creation was ambitious. In the early 20th century Weimar’s Stadtbaudirektor August Lehrmann had a vision. He took plans from Max Vogeler dating back to 1917 and expanded them. The result is a remarkable green space. This wasn’t just about planting trees. It was a cultural project a testament to Weimar’s dedication to beauty and well-being.
Lehrmann’s work transformed a once-neglected area. The Asbach a stream that sometimes flows openly sometimes underground gives its name to this special place. The Asbach-Grünzug is more than just a park. It’s a significant example of garden and landscape design. In fact its importance is so high it was placed under protection in 1993. This green space is considered a national urban development project.
The Asbach-Grünzug isn’t static. It has seen change. Part of the eastern section had to make way for the Gauforum. Today the Bauhaus Museum stands there on the Stéphane Hessel-Platz. This adds a layer to the story of Asbach-Grünzug its past interwoven with Weimar’s modern history. The Grünzug is also part of the Weimar Modern quarter.
Walk along the approximately 1.5 kilometer long avenue of linden and maple trees. It follows the Asbachstraße. The Asbach-Grünzug is a place of leisure. The Vimaria Stadium and its forecourt are nestled within it. So is the Schwanseebad opened in 1928. And don’t forget the Weimarhallenpark. This park even contains a Weimarhalle a city hall built in 1931.
The Asbach-Grünzug is a place of beauty a legacy of thoughtful planning. It’s a reminder of Weimar’s innovative spirit. As you stand here take in the serene atmosphere. Appreciate the vision of those who created this green oasis. The Asbach-Grünzug isn’t just a park. It is a piece of Weimar’s soul a lasting testament to its commitment to culture and nature. This is a place to linger a place to be inspired by the harmony between urban development and the natural world. The Asbach-Grünzug. Truly unique.
