Mystery shrouds the Artur Zawisza Plaque. Who was this man, commemorated here at this bustling Warsaw square? Many confuse him with Zawisza Czarny, the 15th-century knight. But this plaque honors a different hero, Artur Zawisza, nicknamed “Czarny” (Black), a 19th-century revolutionary. Born in 1808, young Artur was a firebrand, participating in patriotic demonstrations and challenging authority. His school records even labeled him a troublemaker. When the November Uprising erupted, Artur, barely a man, fought bravely at Białołęka, Grochów, Ostrołęka, and Balice, earning the Virtuti Militari cross for his valor. After the uprising’s failure, he sought refuge in France, immersing himself in law, philosophy, and literature. But the call of Poland was too strong. He returned to lead a partisan group. Sadly, near Krośniewice, his small band was captured. A Russian military court sentenced him to death. On November 26, 1833, at just 25 years old, Artur Zawisza was publicly executed at Warsaw’s execution square. This very spot. In 1928, the square was renamed in his honor. His death resonated deeply among Polish exiles in France. The Artur Zawisza Plaque serves as a stark reminder of his sacrifice, a testament to a young life given for Poland’s freedom.
